Oral Conscious Sedation
Relaxing in the Chair
For oral conscious sedation, the doctors at Walnut Ranch Dental Spa will evaluate your level of dental anxiety and write you a prescription for 1-2 sedatives. Often one pill is taken the night before your procedure to assist with obtaining a good night’s sleep, the other pill is generally taken 30-60 minutes before your appointment. With this type of sedation, you will need a driver to take you home.
The sedative method will make you feel drowsy and although you’ll remain awake and responsive during your dental treatment, you won’t feel any pain. Some people become groggy enough from moderate oral sedation to actually fall asleep during the procedure.
Oral sedation additionally helps reduce memory of the sights and smells of the dental office to avoid recall of any trauma. The sedative effect allows more dentistry to be completed in fewer appointments as well as allowing complex procedures to be performed in less time.
The main advantages of oral sedation versus other sedation methods are:
- Ease of administration (you only have to take a pill)
- No needles involved
- High patient acceptance
- Amnesic effect
- Lower cost vs intravenous sedation
