Can You Get Cavities with Veneers?

From correcting irregularly-shaped teeth to disguising small chips and severe discoloration, it’s amazing how much veneers can transform a person’s smile. This cosmetic treatment works by bonding thin shells of tooth-colored material to the outside of your teeth to permanently change their appearance.

You may expect that this shell provides extra protection so your tooth becomes less likely to develop tooth decay. However, teeth with veneers can still get cavities!

Veneers don’t completely replace teeth—they’re only placed on top of your natural teeth. Plus, the back of your tooth isn’t covered at all. So while a veneer can’t develop cavities because of its artificial material, your underlying tooth still can.

Likewise, dental crowns themselves can’t get cavities but the tooth under your restoration is still susceptible to decay.

How to Prevent Cavities If You Have Veneers

To prevent cavities from developing underneath your veneers, maintain the same oral health habits that prevent cavities on teeth where there are no veneers. For example, brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, gently cleaning every surface of your teeth. Floss at least once a day to remove food and bacteria that are stuck between your teeth. Consume a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. And avoid tobacco products.

Aside from these habits at home, visit your dentist at least two times a year. During these routine appointments, your dental hygienist will clean your teeth and gums and your dentist will check that there are no issues developing with your teeth or veneers.
