Tooth Extraction Aftercare
July 17, 2025 9:00 amHaving a tooth pulled isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of fun—but sometimes it’s necessary to protect your long-term oral health. Whether it’s a stubborn wisdom tooth, a damaged molar, or part of a larger treatment plan, extractions are a common dental procedure. What happens after the extraction, though, can make all the difference in how you heal.
Good tooth extraction aftercare isn’t complicated, but it does require consistency. The goal is to protect the extraction site, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of infection or complications like dry socket. If you’ve recently had a tooth removed—or have one coming up—knowing what to expect can help the process go more smoothly.
What to Expect in the First 24 Hours
Bleeding is normal right after the extraction. Dr. Treanor will place gauze to help form a clot. It’s important to bite down gently and leave the gauze in place as directed. That clot is what protects the site and starts the healing process.
Rest is key. Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, or bending over. Those movements can dislodge the clot or increase bleeding.
What to Avoid While Healing
Certain habits can interfere with healing. Don’t use a straw for the first few days—suction can loosen the clot. Smoking is another big one to skip, as it slows healing and raises the risk of infection.
You’ll also want to avoid swishing or rinsing aggressively. Gentle saltwater rinses can help after the first 24 hours, but too much force can be harmful early on.
Try not to touch the area with your tongue or fingers. It might be tempting, but it slows healing and increases the chance of complications.
Eating, Drinking, and Managing Discomfort
Stick with soft, cool foods for the first day or two. Yogurt, applesauce, and scrambled eggs are all good options. Avoid anything crunchy, spicy, or hot until the area feels better.
Mild swelling and discomfort are common. An ice pack and over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. Just be sure to follow Dr. Treanor’s specific instructions when it comes to medications and timing.
